Mysteries Suspended more early cases of Sherlock Holmes Frank McPartland 9781520221663 Books

IN THE WORLD of criminal detection Sherlock Holmes has no equal. His cases have been vividly chronicled by his friend, Doctor Watson; making the two of them household names throughout the world. But what of that long period between the first case to be recorded and the second? — a question asked by many scholars. Seven years of crimes and mysteries are, as yet, unaccounted for — early cases that show the intellectual brilliance, together with the idiosyncrasies and fallibility of Holmes’s ‘methods’. Now fans of the great detective can fascinate themselves with the first ten of these early stories. Once again, you can stroll with trepidation through the fog-laden streets and alleyways of old London Town and relive more of the early cases of Sherlock Holmes in ‘Mysteries Suspended’ by Frank McPartland

The set of stories from Mr McPartland should go back to the tin box or bank vault where they were found. The language is dull, dry and lifeless. Holmes is not the Holmes of the Canon; unsure, nervous, guesing and certainly lacking knowledge and confidence. The structure of the tales is unsatisfactory. Each conclusion is not shown to the reader. Instead, Watson narrates it as, "Holmes did this. Holmes said this. This happens." Not only is this unfaithful to the writing and style of the Canon but it continues the dull, dry and lifeless style. Mr. McPartland should study the Canon extensively and attempt to do a better job of emulating Watson's style and narration structure before publishing any more stories!Product details

Loved it
Okay read
Half way through. Have enjoyed every story so far.
Great buy!!!
I found this disappointing. I didn't enjoy the stories, they weren't good Sherlock stories. I can not recommend this book.
This volume contains good stories. The highest praise I can provide is saying that if these stories would have been scattered through the original Conan Doyle collection, readers would have been very hard pressed to determine which story was written by which authors. Although store quality is somewhat uneven in various places, it is an excellent addition to any collection.
While this paperback was apparently released in 2017 I just realized that the original publication date was in 1992. But, in case anyone is looking for feedback, I thought I would offer my thoughts. While I have read and enjoyed literally hundreds of Sherlock Holmes pastiches these stories were not among them as they were neither clever nor interesting in my view. Despite the disappointment I kept reading each story in the hope that the next one would be interesting but, unfortunately, that didn't happen. The final straw was finding out that the last story, entitled "Yellowhat", ended with the note of "to be continued" and the challenge (along with some sort of prize) to readers to come up with a conclusion on their own which closely matched the author's original ending. While this might seem ingenious it's more likely an attempt to encourage the sale of another volume which, in all likelihood, would be equally disappointing. My suggestion would be to avoid this volume and the sequel as well.
